You don't say?"13.01.12 Shortcuts page, Ian Sample ---Modern violins vs. old violins

Since a hotel room is not a concert hall, how can the carrying power of a violin be properly judged? The acoustics of a shower stall, for example, can make a factory fiddle sound as resonant as a Strad, while a Strad played in a bedroom (with thick carpeting, heavy drapes, and velvet wallpaper) will sound muted. This is why some unscrupulous applicants for a symphony position submit an audition tape recorded in a tiled bathroom.

Another troublesome question raised by Dr. Fritz's experiments is obvious: How will the modern instrument sound 300 years from now? While the ancient Cremonese violins appear to improve over the centuries, many modern instruments lose their initial brilliance and tonal quality within a few years. Consequently, the criteria of durability must be included along with "response and tone colours" to prove the superiority of one instrument over the other. And of course this is impossible.

So I conclude that happiness for an elderly violinist is an old fiddle and a young wife---but definitely not a young violin that might not outlive its player.

Les Dreyer

(Retired violinist of the Met Opera Orchestra)

(917) 670-6865 180 West End Ave. NYC 10023 U.S.A.
Les Dreyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04633222246745320485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6943785024784808558.post-167595807721758242011-12-04T05:38:00.001-08:002011-12-04T05:38:39.074-08:00Fw: "Anniversary Brings a Liszt Epiphany by Tom Service (04.11.11)
This letter appeared in the Guardian Weekly (Dec.2-8, 2011)

----- Original Message -----
From: Leslie Dreyer

To: Leslie Dreyer

Sent: Friday, December 02, 2011 4:57 PM

Subject: Fw: "Anniversary Brings a Liszt Epiphany by Tom Service (04.11.11)

----- Original Message -----
From: Leslie Dreyer

To: weekly.letters@guardian.co.uk

Sent: Sunday, November 20, 2011 10:31 AM

Subject: "Anniversary Brings a Liszt Epiphany by Tom Service (04.11.11)

There isn't a pianist on this planet who has not complained of the fiendishly difficult passages in Liszt's compositions. Yet the excuse of many young concert pianists for omitting Liszt from their repertoire, because their hands are too small to negotiate the numerous octaves and tenths, is a lame one at best. An example of a pianist who, with intensive practice and keyboard exercises managed to overcome this problem, is the legendary Ruth Slenczynska. Moreover, it may "play" beautifully, but what does it sound like? While the innovation of 3-dimensional printing from digital designs will revolutionize manufacturing, I doubt if Stradivari will turn over in his grave, or whether modern violin makers will fear that their craft will become obsolete overnight. For over 300 years, not even with advanced scientific analysis, has anyone been able to ascertain exactly what the secret of the Cremona masters was---their aged wood, their varnish, or some magical formula that defies analysis altogether. Granted, Jascha Heifetz could make an aluminum fiddle sound beautiful, even played with a fiberglass bow, as he did on concert tours in tropical climates. Yet I cannot imagine any living violinist playing a Carnegie Hall recital with that EOS violin. And I will not be trading in my 1715 Daniel Parker any time soon---unless that anonymous "concert violinist" who played on the EOS instrument can convince me that it sounds like a Strad.

Les Dreyer

(Retired violinist of the Met Opera Orchestra)

180 West End Ave.

NYC 10023 USA

Les Dreyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04633222246745320485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6943785024784808558.post-31411801498436824982011-02-13T09:08:00.001-08:002011-02-21T09:16:25.170-08:00Re: This blog-website
Please note: I post only published opinions in this site, and all dates and text have been carefully checked by each publication's fact-checkers for sources and accuracy of references.

Les Dreyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04633222246745320485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6943785024784808558.post-71335128258857769082011-02-08T11:14:00.001-08:002011-04-03T07:26:00.464-07:00

Les Dreyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04633222246745320485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6943785024784808558.post-14892065466393470012011-02-03T05:24:00.000-08:002011-02-03T05:25:04.737-08:00Fw: "A Most Unlyrical Diva" (Jan.14/11)

This appeared in The Guardian Weekly (Jan.28/11)

A Most Unlyrical Diva

Anna Nicole Smith may have been a sexy prima donna, a Playboy Bunny, and a TV celebrity. Yet is she worthy of an opera? Even referring to her as a diva, unlyrical or not, is a blot on the noble title of "diva" altogether. By definition, a diva is an operatic goddess. A prima donna, on the other hand, is merely the leading female soloist in an opera, or any performer who is temperamental and conceited, as Ms. Smith certainly was. Yet she was no diva. The media portrayed her at various times as an American femme fatale, a trophy wife, a courtesan, a drug addict with a lifelong eating disorder, and an uninhibited vulgarian with a vast vocabulary of scatological expletives.

Courtesans and fallen women have always been favorite subjects of painters, authors, and opera librettists. Yet when I think of Bizet's Celeste Mogador (who wrote novels), poetess Veronica Franco, and the many gifted singers, dancers, actresses (for example, Sarah Bernhardt and Coco Chanel), whose lives also came from tawdry beginnings, I doubt that I could appreciate an opera about Ms. Smith,--- unless Mr. Turnage's orchestral score and soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek's singing is so wonderful that I could just listen to the music. Nonetheless, with the ROH director's warning that Richard Thomas's libretto contains "extreme language, drug abuse and sexual content," I foresee a mass exodus of disgusted opera lovers, including myself, who believe that extreme profanity has no place on the opera stage.

Les Dreyer

(Retired violinist of the Met Opera Orchestra)

Les Dreyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04633222246745320485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6943785024784808558.post-67622111238974624672010-12-02T17:49:00.001-08:002010-12-02T17:49:08.213-08:00Fw: "Butt of the orchestra gets a makeover" (05.11.10)
This letter appeared in The Guardian Weekly, Dec.3, 1210.

----- Original Message -----
From: Leslie Dreyer

To: weekly.letters@guardian.co.uk

Sent: Tuesday, November 09, 2010 1:30 PM

Subject: "Butt of the orchestra gets a makeover" (05.11.10)

The revolutionary design of the contraforte may someday render the traditional contrabassoon obsolete, as well as relieving bassoonists from being the unfortunate butts of orchestral jokes. Yet I recall one contrabassoonist---a deceased colleague of mine who played for many years in the pit of the Metropolitan Opera Housewho was probably the sole bassoonist in orchestral history never reviled or joked about. I refer to Hugo Burghauser, who was invited to join the Vienna Opera Orchestra by no less than Richard Strauss in 1917. Mr. Burghauser was President of the Vienna Philharmonic from 1933 to 1938, and during his regime hired Arturo Toscanini, Karl Boehm, Herbert Von Karajan, and Bruno Walter. His complex journey into the Met orchestra pit began when he fled the Nazis in 1938. Practically penniless, he ran into Carla Toscanini in Paris, where she was on a shopping spree. Without hesitation she gave him money for a boat trip to America, where she and Arturo were also headed the next day. In New York, the director of the Metropolitan Opera, Sir Rudolf Bing, (who was an opera-buff clerk in a Viennese bookstore in 1934, while Burghauser was indisputably the most powerful figure in the music world), heard of his plight and offered him the Met orchestra position of contrabassoon.

Whenever maestro Boehm conducted at the Met and spied Burghauser sitting in the rear of the pit, there were invariably nostalgic embraces and moist eyes. Sadly though, the former President of the Vienna Philharmonic was not the same virtuoso bassoonist hired by Strauss in 1917. I recall maestro Boehm conducting a series of Beethoven's Fidelios, in which there is a notorious brief solo for contrabassoon. As Ms. Midgette notes in her article, the contrabassoon is known for its "sometimes flatulent sound." Now whenever that solo came (even at the broadcast!), what emitted from Burghauser's Heckel instrument can only be described as sheer flatulence. Yet not one musician laughed or even breathed during those few catastrophic moments, while Boehm, who was known to fly into a rage over musical mishaps, merely tossed his old comrade a faint smile and a wink. It saddens me that the contraforte was invented over a half century too late for poor Burghauser.

Les Dreyer

(Retired violinist with the Met Opera Orchestra)

180 West End Ave.

NYC 10023 USA

Les Dreyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04633222246745320485noreply@blogger.com0
